US Oil Tests Rising Channel as Iran Peace Hopes Pressure Prices

US oil is approaching a crucial technical level after suffering a sharp sell-off on Monday, as renewed diplomatic efforts involving Iran raised hopes of easing Middle East supply disruptions.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell approximately 7.4% to settle near $96.46 a barrel, as investors began pricing out part of the geopolitical risk premium that had supported oil prices during the conflict.

The decline followed reports of talks involving Iranian and Qatari officials, raising expectations that a potential diplomatic breakthrough could eventually restore more stable shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, fresh US strikes on Iranian targets and uncertainty surrounding negotiations have since encouraged some buying interest, highlighting how sensitive crude prices remain to geopolitical developments.

Technical Outlook: Is US Oil Preparing to Break Lower?

From a technical perspective, US oil has been trading within a rising channel since its June lows, maintaining a sequence of higher highs and higher lows.

However, the latest sell-off has brought prices back towards the channel’s lower boundary, currently around $97–98, where buyers appear to be attempting to defend the broader bullish structure.

A sustained break below this support could signal that upward momentum is weakening, potentially opening the door to a deeper correction towards $92 and subsequently the $88–90 region.

Conversely, if buyers successfully defend the channel, prices could recover towards the $103–105 resistance area, followed by the channel’s midpoint near $108.

For now, the key question is whether improving diplomatic prospects will continue to erode oil’s geopolitical risk premium or whether renewed tensions will encourage buyers to defend the prevailing uptrend.
