The foreign exchange (forex) market is a decentralized global market where currencies are traded. It has no physical location and is open 24 hours a day from Sunday evening through Friday night. Forex trading involves the buying and selling of currencies in pairs, with the goal of profiting from fluctuations in exchange rates. Currencies are traded against one another and priced in relation to each other.
*Risk Warning: Trading leveraged products such as forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors.
The most heavily traded and liquid currency pairs are called the "majors." These include EUR/USD (Euro/U.S. Dollar), USD/JPY (U.S. Dollar/Japanese Yen), GBP/USD (British Pound/U.S. Dollar), USD/CHF (U.S. Dollar/Swiss Franc), USD/CAD (U.S. Dollar/Canadian Dollar), AUD/USD (Australian Dollar/U.S. Dollar), and NZD/USD (New Zealand Dollar/U.S. Dollar).
The forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Trading begins each day in Wellington, New Zealand, and moves around the globe as the business day begins in each financial center, first to Sydney, Tokyo, London and finally New York. At the end of the trading session in New York on Friday, the market closes and reopens in Wellington on Monday.
Leverage is capital provided by a broker to amplify a trader's investment potential. It allows traders to control larger position sizes with a smaller capital outlay.
For example, 1:100 leverage means $1 in a trading account gives the trader the ability to trade up to $100 in the market.
Alchemy Markets offers leverage up to 1:500 on major currency pairs*.
*Risk Warning: Leverage can increase your profits, but it can also increase your losses. Please make sure you understand how it works before trading.
A pip is the smallest price movement by which a currency pair can change. It represents the final decimal place in most exchange rate quotes.
For example, if the EUR/USD exchange rate moves from 1.0872 to 1.0873, that 0.0001 increase equals one pip.
For most major currency pairs, one pip = 0.0001, which is equal to one-hundredth of one percent.
Pips are used to calculate profit and loss by measuring how much the price has moved in your favor or against your position.
The spread is the difference between the bid (sell) and ask (buy) prices of a currency pair. It represents the transaction cost of opening a position.
For example, if the EUR/USD bid price is 1.0870 and the ask price is 1.0872, the spread is 2 pips.
Common order types in forex trading include market, limit, stop, take profit (T/P), stop loss (S/L), and trailing stop orders.
• Market Order: Executes immediately at the current available market price.
• Limit Order: Executes when the market reaches a specific price set by the trader, usually to enter at a better level.
• Stop Order: Triggers when the market reaches a specified level, typically used to limit losses or capture profits.
• Take Profit (T/P) and Stop Loss (S/L): Automatically close a trade when it reaches the desired profit or loss level.
• Trailing Stop: Automatically adjusts with favorable price movements to help lock in profits while minimizing downside risk.

• Setting stop-loss orders to manage potential losses.
• Regularly monitoring your open positions and account equity.
To calculate risk on a trade, use this formula:
Risk = Position Size * Pip Value * Stop Loss in Pips
As a general guideline, many traders choose to risk no more than 1–2% of their trading capital on a single trade. Proper position sizing and use of stop losses are critical.

The stop out level refers to the percentage equity level at which your leveraged positions will be automatically closed out or stopped out by the broker to prevent further losses once your margin falls below a minimum threshold. It is calculated as: Stop Out % = (Equity / Used Margin) x 100.
Your current used margin, free margin, account equity balance and stop out level are displayed prominently on the account overview page once you login to the trading platform. Most platforms also provide customizable margin level alerts.
Once your remaining equity crosses below the stop out level (for example 50), the broker's risk management systems will begin automatically closing out your largest open losing positions one by one to free up margin and protect against further losses.
No, the stop out level percentage is predetermined by the broker based on account type. It is typically set by the system. Traders cannot modify the stop out level themselves.
Yes, unlimited demo accounts are provided for free, pre-loaded in virtual currency for practice trading. Demo accounts allow testing of strategies in a simulated environment with real live market data before risking capital on a live account.
Scalping and short-term trading strategies are generally permitted at Alchemy Markets. However, all trading activity must comply with our Terms and Conditions and Order Execution Policy.
Proper risk management is crucial for successful trading. We advocate only risking 1-2% of account equity on each trade by using reasonable leverage with stop losses. Money management techniques like this help preserve trading capital over the long run.
