That combination has pushed the S&amp;P 500 back toward the 7,300 area, or close enough that traders now have to treat it as a live level. After the move into 7,265, the gap is not that wide anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That does not mean 7,300 has to print exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means the market is already close enough for the bigger question to take over: does this good-news wave still have enough fuel to squeeze a little further, or is it setting up the sort of peak that gets followed by a mid-year shakeout?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this piece, we\u2019re looking at three things now shaping the next move:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Why Tom Lee\u2019s 7,300 projection is suddenly within reach<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Why SOX\/SPX may decide whether the S&amp;P 500 squeeze has real backing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Why midterm-year seasonality puts \u201cSell in May\u201d risk back on the table<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SOX\/SPX is where the caution starts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cleaner warning sign is not the S&amp;P 500 itself. It is SOX\/SPX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOX is the semiconductor index. However, a more interesting level would be the midline of the rising channel, which is near 1.47.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If semiconductors are stalling here or grinds higher, the index can still squeeze a little higher on earnings and improving Iran headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if a breakdown begins, S&amp;P 500 should begin to weaken as it is currently sustained by AI earning headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7,300 may come first, then the risk changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 chart is now less about whether the rebound worked and more about how far this squeeze can still go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 Just in today.<br><br>Tom Lee who accurately called for ATH\u2019s this month, reiterates we will see 7,300 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24SPX&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$SPX<\/a> in the near term then we might see a 15-20% drawdown after, before a Q4 rally back to ATH\u2019s at 7,700 to close the year.<br><br>So timeline looks something like this:<br><br>7,300\u2026<\/p>&mdash; Heisenberg (@Mr_Derivatives) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mr_Derivatives\/status\/2044896693750222913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 16, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One projection making the rounds recently comes from <strong>Tom Lee of Fundstrat<\/strong>. Lee has argued that the S&amp;P 500 can still push toward <strong>7,300<\/strong>, helped by resilient earnings, easing inflation pressure and a market that has not fully chased the rally yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, he has also said an S&amp;P 500 move above <strong>7,700<\/strong> this year is \u201cvery probable,\u201d after markets moved past early-year risks around Iran, private credit and Fed uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That fits the current setup, but not as a straight-line melt-up story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1356\" src=\"https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2.png 2048w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2-1024x678.png 1024w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2-768x509.png 768w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-2-1536x1017.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 has already traded into <strong>7,265<\/strong>, so 7,300 does not need some heroic final leg. It only needs the current good-news wave to last a little longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our read is that <strong>7,300 is the interesting zone<\/strong>, not because it has to stop the market exactly, but because the risk-reward starts to change once price gets there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If semiconductors regain momentum and SOX\/SPX pushes through its own resistance, the S&amp;P 500 can still stretch beyond 7,300. In that case, the next upside references sit around <strong>7,395 to 7,400<\/strong>, then <strong>7,650<\/strong> if momentum keeps running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those higher levels only matter if leadership holds underneath the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If chip leadership keeps stalling while the S&amp;P 500 pushes into 7,300, the move starts to look less like a fresh breakout and more like the final squeeze before correction risk takes over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sell in May fits the path better after 7,300, not before<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at this <strong>Midterm Election year seasonality chart<\/strong> from Artemis from February 2026 &#8211; it\u2019s the typical price movement of S&amp;P 500 during midterm election years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, the path lines up extremely well with Tom Lee\u2019s projections. May typically is a weaker month for the S&amp;P leading into June, where the price then recovers and makes a new ATH into December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"663\" src=\"https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-3.png 1200w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-3-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-3-1024x566.png 1024w, https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-3-768x424.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this is not a forecast, it is based on historical averages. So if the path ensues, we could see the following happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After consolidating near our current levels (potentially tapping $7,300), S&amp;P 500 drops 15-20%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This pullback brings us back to the 2025 peaks at ~$6,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another rally begins around June, allowing S&amp;P to remain bullish to year end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The year end targets could be near $7,700 as Tom Lee projected, but if not, <a href=\"https:\/\/alchemymarkets.com\/education\/indicators\/fibonacci-extensions\/\">Fib Extension levels<\/a> could be good targets as well. Only time will tell if this typical mid-term pathing will rhyme true again in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran coming back to the table, softer oil and firm earnings have been enough to put S&amp;P 7,300 back in play. But the more important read is underneath the headline index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOX\/SPX is already in a potential rejection zone.
