Markets opened the week with fresh ISM data that continues to lean heavy. New orders contracted for a fourth straight month \u2014 coming in at 47.6<\/strong>, barely up from April\u2019s 47.2<\/strong>, and still below the 12-month average of 48.6. This isn\u2019t a one-off. We\u2019ve now got a clean streak of weakening demand since the back half of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panel commentary from the report backs that up. There\u2019s no momentum shift here \u2014 still the same mix of soft overseas orders, ongoing tariff-related negotiations, and a slight edge toward concern on forward demand. The ratio of positive to negative comments? About\u00a01 to 1.5<\/strong>\u00a0in favour of cautiousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inventories told a similar story. Dropped to 46.7<\/strong> from 50.8, back into contraction. First time we\u2019ve seen that since February. The pull-forward on materials (tariff protection) looks done \u2014 now it\u2019s about aligning stock levels with weaker expectations. Of the major manufacturing sectors, just two expanded inventory-wise last month. That\u2019s not rotation \u2014 that\u2019s hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the board, sectors are either sitting flat or easing. Not enough strength to push the needle forward, and not enough panic to scream recession \u2014 but very much a stall<\/strong>. A pause. A market that\u2019s waiting, unsure if growth\u2019s going to pick back up or if we\u2019re drifting into a mild slowdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s where price confirms the macro. We\u2019re still inside this descending channel<\/strong> that\u2019s been building since late May. SPY tapped into the upper bound<\/strong> around $593<\/strong> and got cleanly rejected. That zone lines up with a key structure level, and unless we get a surprise macro bid, it\u2019s acting as a ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the market keeps digesting soft data and pricing in a mild recession<\/strong> \u2014 which I already leaned toward in my recent weekly \u2014 we\u2019ve got space to the lower bound<\/strong> of this channel. Call it $570\u2013$572<\/strong> as the next downside magnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price action is holding up \u2014 barely \u2014 but if this week doesn\u2019t bring a macro tailwind (jobs data, Fed tone shift), that lower level\u2019s going to look increasingly attractive. No real signs of broad sector rotation out of cyclicals or into defensives yet, but participation is narrowing. That\u2019s a warning sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISM didn\u2019t crater \u2014 but it didn\u2019t bounce either. This was the fourth straight month of contraction in new orders<\/strong>, and inventories flipped negative. That\u2019s not what a bottom looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until we see a shift in forward orders or inventory build-up, the story stays the same: slowdown, not collapse<\/strong>. SPY reflects that \u2014 trapped under resistance, trading a range.
